Neal - speculating is fun - I'm so tired of people trying to put a halt to fun discussion because there is "no official word". This Board has had
a long quiet period and as soon as we get a snippet of information to chat about people try to stop the conversation in its tracks. It's so annoying!
As for The Normal Heart, my gut tells me its a little further along than we are giving credit for. Just my opinion and me SPECULATING!!! Barbra was burned badly last time around for being so indecisive on this project and she will have learned lessons from that. The fact that she says she is considering this project and has an "interesting cast lined up" says a lot to me. Perhaps I'm just reading more into it than others - nothing wrong with that. I'm certainly not setting myself up for any disappointment or misleading anyone!! We all have our opinions!! Glenn. |

I agree with you Glenn. If we waited for things to actually get announced or happen, we might as well sign off and just meet up here every four years to
praise Barbra to the heavens. Zzzzzz.
And Nealb1. what it this now, your five hundredth mention of "where are those people who said the DVD would never happen"? We get it already. --Ed |

Glenn- I agree. The "interesting cast lined up", does make it seem more tangible. Wonder if Barbra, is considering Josh Brolin to play Ned.?

Tony Kushner, ( Angels In America ), was hired to do a polish to the script about 3 years ago, much to the utter horror of Kramer. Streisand was very
influential in the decision to do that...most everyone realizes that Streisand will be the artist who directs the movie version while wisely choosing
to not take a starring role...which is what makes this next move, ( writing a book about design ), so disappointing; after years of nothing on the film front,
another 18 month delay to write about the reason for years of nothing on the film front is...well, let's just say I'm clearly in the minority here and
can contain my excitement over another, alternative outlet for 'Barbra' to express her genius...

I don't anticipate the book getting in the way of making a movie. It's going to be crammed with pictures and text around those pictures .... she
isn't sitting down and penning an autobiography and she will have people working with her to move it along. And we don't actually know if this has been
in the works for a while and half way done????!!! The book project will not get in the way of a movie if the movie is coming together and progressing .......
IF !!!!!

I respectfully disagree, Glenn. Does Barbra do anything half-hearted? Even if others are contributing, she'll be overseeing, approving, modifying, making
comments, adding to the vision, etc. And even if the project is halfway finished, she'll likely look over what's been done, decide she'd like to go
in a different direction, ask that re-shoots be done, some things left, some things re-shot, etc.
She said something very revealing in '94 when discussing her stage fright. She told "Vanity Fair" that midway through the tour, she realized that she didn't have to make herself sick before a concert in order to put on a good show. I think Barbra feels she has to put herself through an arduous process and work to the brink of exhaustion in order to put out something worthy of stamping her name on it. So I don't think Barbra will allow herself to smoothly sail through this project, and have energy left over to develop a movie in the process.

my thoughts | ||

I thought it was well known that Barbra multi-tasks. I think I can recall her talking about this to the print media on various occasions during her peak film
career. My personal opinion is that she can and will be working on both projects (the design book and The Normal Heart) as well as finishing her upcoming
album all during the next 19 months, plus anything else we are not aware of. MAYBE the "interesting cast" are actors or actresses already committed
to other projects until the end of 2010....therefore not her dragging her feet at all but just being the same person she has always been.....a MULTI-TASKER.

No, no, no...I happen to know that Pauly Shore will not be available for "The Normal Heart" in 2011.

Zev ... it is fine that you "respectfully disagree" with me but as has been previously said Barbra is indeed a muli-tasker. Someone else wrote that
Barbra was involved in a revision of The Normal Heart 3 years ago ..... and we had no idea about that. I'm certainly not saying that Barbra will not be
committed to the book project .. I'm saying that she will have other projects to juggle at the same time. Our girl aint a one trick pony.

Gosh, Glenn, I don't know if I agree. Barbra has always spoken about how totally absorbed, even obsessed she gets with a project, particularly a film.
She's pondered whether, in fact, she could even be married and direct a movie!
I don't know if I believe Barbra was involved in a revision of "The Normal Heart" three years ago. She lost the rights to the property years before. Her option ran out and Larry Kramer took the rights back from her. So how could she commission a revision of a property she doesn't own? |

I guess we agree to disagree Zev. Almost a year ago Jimmy announced Barbra was working on something pretty special film-wise - much prior to a book
announcement. Barbra now refers to The Normal Heart in interviews and has now announced an she has an interesting cast lined up ... I guess she can work on a
book and movie at the same time. And I will say it again, the book is probably going to be more pictures than text. It also referred in the article that the
book would have historical information .... that's already available to a researcher working with her on the book.

Well, I do hope you're right and I'm wrong, Glenn.
In introducing myself to a gay filmgoing group on MeetUp.com, I wrote "It would be great to see Barbra Streisand's next film (scheduled for release Christmas, 2025) with a bunch of gay friends!" I stand by my prediction. |

I would not be at all surprised if this book has been in the works since she started the house five years ago. She has always wanted to do something like this
and it would have been counterproductive to conceive a book after the construction is done. Barbra is not a counterproductive person. :>
I believe "The Normal Heart" is going to happen this time around. Jim mentioned that she wants to do something poignant and if she could ever get Larry Kramer to "play ball" with her and let her direct her vision (not just his original play), I think they could commit to the screen a great film. I even feel that now it would be more effective because it's historical -- it has to be set in that time. It could be as great as "Milk," which was one of the best films of 2008. I recently interviewed Emmy producer Don Mischer about the show, and I asked him about Barbra. He worked with her on Timeless. You can read his comments here: http://barbra-archives.com/live/00s/timeless_concert_streisand.html Anyway, the impression I got from Don was that Barbra is an extremely hard-worker. She's fearless about trying different things and working on something until it's just right. I can't imagine her approaching this book project with any less focus or attention to detail. It's just not in her nature to do things in a slipshod manner. I remember a story about the famous Barbra and Neil duet at the Grammys. It was the first time they had ever performed "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" on stage and on camera. The director wasn't sure how to stage the number, especially since they were not going to be announced beforehand. They were just going to appear after a commercial. Barbra had the idea of them coming from opposite sides of the stage and singing as they approached each other. Instead of just winging it, Barbra suggested, "Can we run some tape and see how it looks?" She staged and directed the scene and was smart enough to rehearse and review the tape. Now, would it have been brilliant without the rehearsal or staging -- if they had just lifted the curtain and they were there center stage and sang on stools? -- maybe. I think her vision, her attention to detail, is part of what makes everything she does special. I wish I had her gift -- and her tenacity -- in everything that I did. :>

Is it known why Larry and Barbra can't agree on a script? What changes is Barbra wanting to make??

I remember there was a big disagreement about one(?) line: don't remember exactly but Kramer had the main character saying to his brother they were the
same and Streisand could not agree with that.....(just what I remember, maybe not totally correct)
